Project 02 – 5C Models

Exercise in Lockdown

Here is the whole process of my project 2

This project requires us to do user modelling techniques, the aim of this project was to analyze users in depth and investigate their behavior in order to understand and enrich the user experience.

My topic is exercise in lockdown

.

Idea :

The reason I did this is because the Corona virus has really affected people’s lives and they can’t go out during lockdown time. A lot of things have been limited and in this series I chose to exercise. It’s a normal but unusual activity and it’s aimed at a specific group of people, some who never exercise, some who work out occasionally and some who love to work out. So I think this research is very relevant. In this project, my target user is the international student group, which is divided into undergraduates, masters students and PhD students in that order.

.

Research

Primary research

Firstly, I interviewed 50 international students, all from different universities and different cities. I used a questionnaire to interview them. You can see from the data visualisation on the right that of the 50, 48% were male and 52% were female.

Next, there were 20 undergraduates, a total of 40 percent, with eight in first and second years and 12 in third and fourth years.

After that you can see that there are 28 masters, which is 52%. And there are only 4 PhD students, which is 8%, because I don’t come into contact with too many PhD students in my normal life.

Of these people, 86% exercised during Lockdown, while 14% did not do so during Lockdown.

And when I surveyed them on what they generally did during Lockdown, 96% chose to play on their phones, 58% chose to play games, while 74% chose to watch TV, 60% chose to read a book, 86% chose to exercise, 30% chose to cook, and finally 44% chose to do other activities. Note that this is a multiple choice question.

.

Secondary Research

This page is my research page, where I have collected many pictures of international students exercising at home. They are more likely to work out with new equipment such as switch rings, or with a fitness app such as KEEP, rather than working out completely on their own.

After interviewing these 50 international students, I found that most of them had the app KEEP, which they used to record their daily workouts and to watch fitness classes on the app. Finally, they would post their fitness logs on Weibo to clock in and KEEP clocking in has now become a very popular activity, with around 102.3 million people participating in the KEEP clocking in conversation on Weibo.

Model :

In this model, I have chosen three tasks to present my findings, namely  , empathy map and storyboard.

OUTCOME :

Persona

In persona, I have chosen three people as my target customers, they are zoe, Kimber, and Gabriel. three of them also represent three different groups of people, undergraduate, master and doctoral students respectively.

.

The first persona page is for zoe, who, as you can see, is an undergraduate student

To her right I show her hobbies, she likes hip hop culture, she likes to go out skateboarding and dancing, and she has a dog that he needs to walk every day.

On her left side I show the sports she usually plays, before the epidemic she would swim at the swimming pool, play tennis and badminton and he goes skateboarding every day, but during lockdown he can only jump rope at home, do yoga and run on the family treadmill.

and at the bottom, I have drawn her schedule for the day. The gym is at 6pm and lasts two hours.

.

.

The second persona page is for Kimber.

On her right side I show her hobbies, she likes to go out and take pictures, watch TV shows at home and she likes to cook. She also has a cat and likes to play with it at home.

Before the epidemic she would swim in the swimming pool, play tennis and badminton with her friends, but during lockdown she can only do simple exercises at home and she likes to use a fitness app to exercise and watch online fitness classes on this app.

Her thoughts on Exercise in Lockdown can be seen in the picture.

At the bottom, I have drawn her schedule for the day. Where the workout is at 5pm and lasts for 1 hour.

.

.

The last persona page is for Gabriel.

He likes to play games and he likes to collect toys. He also has a dog that he usually needs to go out and walk.

Before the epidemic he used to go to the gym and occasionally enjoyed playing basketball, football and pool. But during lockdown, he can only run at home on the family treadmill and do some simple exercises. His thoughts on Exercise in Lockdown can be seen in the picture.

At the bottom, I’ve drawn his schedule for the day. The workout is at 8pm and he is irregular, he works out occasionally rather than daily.

Story Board :

This is my story board about Jim, a master ‘s student, and shows how he works out during lockdown.

At the beginning of the lockdown, he had been at home for a month and it was very hard for him. His daily routine consisted of classes and homework, playing on his phone and games in his free time.

One day while playing on his phone he saw his classmate doing a fitness punch on his Twitter feed, the screen showed that his classmate had been working out for 20 days straight and that the workout lasted two hours every day. He saw this and planned to start working out at home too.

First he did yoga, after that, he followed the KEEP APP and did physical training. He also did jump rope, yoga and a whole host of other things. Not having dumbbells at home, he chose to use an oil drum instead of dumbbells for his strength training.

Slowly his gym hours reached 2 hours,he also ended up posting his workouts on his blog and clocking them online.

That’s  all
